It's your first day on the job. You don’t want to appear nervous or stupid, so you try to compensate and become Mr. or Ms. “Know-it-all”. Now everyone can’t stand you! Or better yet, you become a recluse and then appear snobby and standoffish.

When you are in new situations, you are no longer in your comfort zone. It is normal to feel nervous or apprehensive. So here’s some tips on how to let the person you truly are shine on your first day on an assignment or job.

  • Dress appropriately, make sure you are well-groomed, and avoid heavy perfumes or colognes.
  • Smile as you introduce yourself to each person you meet.
  • Make it a point to remember and then call each person by name.
  • Ask questions and take notes.
  • Laugh at yourself! You are bound to make mistakes. Everyone does!
  • Be confident and know that you wouldn’t have been selected for the job if you didn’t possess expertise in your field.
