Are you putting them out too soon?
Fire science has proven that putting out forest fires too quickly allows
undergrowth to survive, providing fuel for future fires. The same holds true in
the workplace. When you take on everyone else’s responsibilities, you are
setting the stage for future fires, which will take you down the path to job
burnout.
Have you been feeling cynical and sarcastic lately? Are you irritable and
impatient? Are you experiencing an inability to feel joy? Do you feel
unmotivated and listless? Many people suffering from burnout will selfmedicate
with food, drugs and/or alcohol, have a change in sleep habits, and
become plagued with unexplained headaches, neck and shoulder pain.
If you feel one or more of the above symptoms, take a look at your typical
workday. Do you spend the majority of your time putting out fires that are not
your responsibility?
Assess the root causes as to why your day is consumed with handling
responsibilities which do not belong on your plate. As a manager, your daily
activities should generate the most revenue and profit for the company.
Learn to delegate responsibilities. Give the job to the person whom you know
can get it done. If there is no one who fits this description, consider hiring one
of our prescreened, highly qualified temporary employees. Or better yet, “try
before you buy” with a temp-to-direct hire professional. Contact TheBestIRS
